The 2014 harvest was characterised by good weather throughout the year. The spring was cool, the summer dry, with only a few extremely hot days in August and a few days of rain in September. Two aspects distinguish the vintage from others. Firstly, some areas experienced very windy conditions during fruit set, and secondly the EU subsidised growers to carry out a thorough green harvest to reduce yields by up to 30-40% in an attempt to grow better quality grapes. æAll varieties reached optimum ripeness of sugars and phenolics without any complications.
The Nero dÍAvola grapes were soft pressed on arrival at the winery, then fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel, with gentle, regular pumping over during fermentation and a maceration of 10-12 days on the skins. The wine remained in stainless steel tank until bottling.
